Behind the Scenes at Ground Earthworks

Great results on site often start well before the first machine is unloaded. At Ground Earthworks, Jonathan takes the time to understand each project properly before arriving, whether it involves turf installation, excavation, soil removal, retaining wall preparation, or general site works. This preparation helps each job run more smoothly, with fewer surprises and a clearer plan from the start.

Understanding the Site Before Work Begins

Before arriving on site, Jonathan considers the property, access, project requirements, and any challenges that may affect the job. This can include speaking with the customer, requesting photos, checking access points, reviewing parking, and understanding issues such as drainage, soil levels, or limited space. For turf projects, Ground Earthworks also partners with trusted local turf suppliers and only arranges for turf to be cut once an order has been placed, helping ensure it arrives in prime condition for installation.

Protecting the Customer’s Property

Ground Earthworks takes property protection seriously, especially when machinery needs to move across driveways, paths, grass, or finished areas. Plywood sheets are placed down where required to help reduce mess and prevent damage from equipment. It is a simple step, but it makes a big difference to keeping the site cleaner and protecting the customer’s property throughout the project.

Preparing Equipment for the Job

Jonathan regularly performs maintenance on Ground Earthworks’ machines to ensure they are ready for reliable, efficient work. Before each project, he also checks whether ramps, attachments, or additional equipment are needed based on access and site conditions. This helps avoid unnecessary delays once the team arrives and ensures the right machinery is ready for the job.

Planning Around Access, Drainage and Materials

A good example of this preparation can be seen in a Wallsend turf installation completed in December 2025. The project involved side access through a single gate, removal of existing zoysia turf and soil, drainage trenching, aggregate, turf underlay, skip bins for disposal, and the installation of 55m² of Sir Walter Buffalo. With excavation, drainage, soil import, disposal, and turf laying all involved, careful planning helped the project move efficiently from preparation through to completion.
